Frequently Asked

Top questions from new customers

How quick is the installation process?

Our smart meters install just as quickly as traditional mechanical meters—they come pre-kitted and ready to use right out of the box. Once installed, the servicer scans a QR code on the unit, fills out a few simple fields, and data starts flowing within 6 hours. End users can create a new account in the RM App to link to their meter from anywhere. Existing users can add as many meters to their account as they'd like.

Is there a price break when ordering multiple meters?

Yes! Discounts start at order quantities of 5 or more meters, with additional breaks at quantities of 25 and 100. The app is also discounted per meter at those quantity thresholds. App prices start at $1 per meter per day.

How does this help with environmental conservation?

We firmly believe that it's impossible to manage what you cannot measure. We've seen many clients reduce their water waste without any adverse impact on their operations simply by being better informed of their water use. Other clients have spotted wasteful (and costly) leaks that dump thousands - and even millions - of gallons of water back into the ground. We've even helped some clients optimize their entire annual irrigation plan by overlaying water usage with annual weather and temperature patterns. The first step to conserving our most critical resources is by measuring the impact we're already having. Only then can we change our behaviors for the better.

What kind of return on investment can I expect?

Our meters are competitively priced with other flow meters. A key difference is that our meters have no moving or mechanical parts and last 10 years, while the typical mechanical (turbine, vortex, etc.) meters only last about 3 years. Our meters also do not require an external power source as each meter operates on a 10-year battery. Hence, our estimated life is limited only by a replaceable battery. Simply swap out the drained battery for a new one and you can expect another 10 years of life.

Furthermore, most of our clients see average cost savings of 25% by optimizing water consumption, reducing compliance fees and penalties, and proactively maintaining their infrastructure before small issues turn into big, costly repairs. We find that our app more than pays for itself in the first year of operation.

What warranty do you offer?

Resource Monitor warrants the Product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship appearing within one (1) year after shipment from Resource Monitor. Let's talk
What size meter do I need?

Resource Monitor meters are based on flow rate. However, for ease of plumbing, you can always install a meter corresponding to the pipe size.

Can I read the meter without an app?

Yes! Both meter types have a display.

Is there a temperature range the meter works in?
E-Series

Functions within 45°F to 122°F (7°C to 50°C). Within this range, measurement accuracy is ±1.5% for normal flow and ±3.0% at minimum flow limits.

M5000

Operates between -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). If temperatures drop below -4°F, the meter automatically shuts off to protect itself. Once temperatures rise above -4°F, the meter turns back on and backfills any missing data.

Do I need to run power to my meter?

No, all RM Meters are battery-powered with an expected life of 10 years. No wires needed.

Do I need Wi-Fi or Ethernet for my meter?

No, all RM Meters are battery-powered with an expected life of 10 years. No wires needed.

Installation and Maintenance

Can I bury the meter?
Only the E-Series supports below-ground installation. M5000 should be above ground.

Underground E-Series installation:

When installed outdoors in a meter box, the E-Series Ultrasonic meter should have a 2-3 inch clearance to avoid damage or strain to the service piping or meter and to accommodate any settling that may occur after installation. Make sure the service pipe in the meter box is bedded correctly so that it is not axially misaligned and that it lies evenly on the bottom of the pipe trench. Place the backfill material covering the pipe appropriately to maintain pipe alignment in the event of eventual ground shifts. This will prevent damage to the pipe. Protect the service lines and the water meter from freezing. The earth covering the service line must be adequate to prevent frost penetration. Due to the smaller volume of water, service line pipes will freeze sooner than the main distribution line. Excavate the meter box pit below the frost line. Even though the meter may be positioned above the frost line, the warmer air rising from the earth below the frost line will reduce the possibility of freezing.

What position does the meter need to be mounted in?
E-Series

Can be installed in any orientation, but the pipe must remain completely full for accurate readings. Best practices include avoiding installation at pipeline high points, vertical downward flow positions, pipe outflow ends, and the pumps' suction side.

M5000

Works in any orientation with proper flow direction (follow "Forward Flow" arrow), but the pipe must remain completely full. Vertical upward flow is preferred for low-pressure/flow conditions. Position electrodes at 3 and 9 o'clock for horizontal mounting to prevent sediment buildup.

How do I know when the meter is activated and sending data to the app?

The meter begins transmitting data to the Resource Monitor software after detecting 15 minutes of continuous water flow. Your data will become viewable in the app within 6 hours after this initial activation.

Do I need to routinely calibrate my meter?

No, routine calibration is not required for either the M5000 or the E-Series. Both are factory-calibrated to traceable standards and designed for long-term accuracy without recalibration under normal use. These meters are widely accepted in regulated municipal and utility applications and meet AWWA and NSF/ANSI/CAN standards.

M5000 - Electromagnetic
  • Calibrated at the factory with traceable certification

  • Calibration values are digitally stored and stable for the life of the meter

  • No recalibration needed unless the electronics are replaced

E-Series G2® – Ultrasonic
  • Solid-state, no moving parts – minimizes wear and drift

  • Factory-tested for accuracy; no field calibration required

  • Optional test ports available for verification, if needed

Both meters are suitable for use without mandated calibration intervals. Calibration certificates are available upon request.
